Qualifications

Skills and Knowledge: Skill in manipulating the controls for driving vehicles in all types of traffic and road conditions. Knowledge of the height, width, length, and weight of the vehicle in order to judge overhead and side clearances, the turning radius, braking distance, and distance to be maintained from other vehicles. Ability to read and understand road maps and to determine shortest and safest route.

Knowledge of defensive driving techniques; judgment to select alternate routes to avoid potential problems. Knowledge of State and local safety rules and regulations. Knowledge and skill to load cargo properly onto vehicle.

Driver's license required. Responsibility: Receives instructions from supervisor on the type of vehicle to be operated, destination, cargo or passengers to be transported, purpose of the trip, deadlines to be met, and any special information. Responsible for safely transporting passengers or cargo to their destinations throughout the installation.

Work is regularly checked and evaluated for timeliness, safe delivery of cargo/passengers and for following instructions. Physical Effort: Work requires light to moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of heavier objects while loading cargo with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment. Moderate physical effort is required in making couplings between vehicle and towed equipment.

Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance. Working Conditions: Operates tram in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout a government installation or establishment.

May operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on installation roads. Conditions of Employment: This position is designated as being subject to unannounced random drug testing under the Department of Navy's Drug Free Workplace Program.

Major Duties

Drives MCCS trams and trailer, which typically have a Gross Vehicle Weight of 15,000 pounds or less, throughout an installation under limited traffic conditions at low speeds. Tram is driven on the basis of either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules over installation roads to transport passengers. Ensures that passenger safety rules and regulations are followed.

Follows established passenger loading and unloading procedures and answers any questions passengers may have. Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, and cleaning and washing vehicles. May use two-way radios to receive and transmit messages.

Completes trip tickets and preventive maintenance records. May drive vehicles such as sedans, jeeps, station wagons, panel trucks, pickup trucks which typically have a Goss Vehicle Weight of more than 10,000 pounds or less, on standard routes on public roads at highway speeds to transport personnel, supplies, materials, or equipment. Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy.

Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Acknowledges customers, smiles and makes eye contact. Asks questions to determine, verify and solve problems. Checks for satisfaction on the quality of goods and services.

Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Uses required safety equipment, and observes safe work procedures.

Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to food sanitation standards. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

Performs other related duties as required.
