About This Position

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.

You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement 04/13/2026. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.) Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education(DOE)]. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT)(R).

Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

Grade Determinations:

In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-10: Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-09 directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Creditable experience includes: carrying out assigned tasks independently, performing varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program; ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures; knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers; ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure; knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography; knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. The incumbent functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below.

The incumbent provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work. *Ability to resolve informal employee complaints. *Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Reference: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G25.

The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is a GS-10. Physical Requirements: Light to Moderate lifting and carrying, up to 44 pounds; straight pulling; pushing; reaching at and above shoulders; use of both hands and fingers required; walking and/or standing (6-8hours); crawling; kneeling; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.

Major Duties

This Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist position is in Diagnostic Imaging services at the VA Maine Healthcare System, Augusta, ME campus.

This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week. The Radiology Lead MRI Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) modality. In the absence of the Chief of Radiology and/or designee, incumbent serves as the contact person for the MRI Technologists.

He/she works closely with the technologists, radiologists, clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exams, and patient and provider satisfaction. This includes the responsibility for planning, developing, and directing the MRI operations of the Radiology Service, in relation to care provided with emergency room patients, inpatient and outpatient clinics, operating rooms, ICU areas, pain clinics and any other location necessary throughout the medical center and offsite locations. Incumbent supports the Chief of Radiology or assigned designee, who provides the general supervision of the position.
