About This Position

About the position: This position is Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the Arts and Crafts Center on Holloman AFB, NM. Incumbent will work primarily 0800-1700 Tuesday through Saturday but could be required to work an occasional night or weekend. Requires frequent standing, stooping, bending, and arm movement. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds. This is a Regular Full Time (RPT) position with benefits.

Qualifying Experience: Must have experience which demonstrates knowledge of wood crafting methods and techniques to make and repair a variety of wooden items with unique and intricate shapes and designs. Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of a wide variety of hardwoods, softwoods, plywoods, veneers, wood substitutes, gluing and bonding agents and other woodworking materials.

Ability to compute and ensure consistency of dimensions on interlocking parts. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices and procedures; ability to prepare operating budget, control and account for funds, prepare supply requisitions and maintain stock and equipment levels. Knowledge of set up, operation and maintenance of precision wood crafting machines and woodworking hand and power tools.

Skill in interpreting complex instructions, sketches, blueprints and specifications to make jigs, templates and fixtures to extend and/or adapt machines. Ability to instruct and assist wood shop patrons. Must be able to follow written and/or oral instruction Must possess skill in dealing with the public.

Major Duties

The primary purpose of this position is to operate and maintain the wood craft shop and provide wood crafting instruction and assistance to patrons. The primary duties of this position include but are not limited to: Operates and maintains a woodworking shop for patron use. Equips shop with a variety of woodworking and wood crafting equipment.

Maintains stock of wood, wood products, and other woodworking shop supplies to complete a variety of woodworking projects. Prepares shop budget. Prepares requests for supplies and equipment required for shop operation.

Registers patrons, collects appropriate fees, and issues materials, tools, and equipment. Requests supplies and equipment for shop operations. Controls and accounts for funds. Develops curriculum for skills development woodworking classes.

Demonstrates proper techniques and methods used in building, refinishing and repairing wood projects. Assists patrons in completing layouts and provides general guidelines involved in estimating material, cost and waste minimizing techniques, selection or substitution of materials. Examines various characteristics of wood, such as soft/hard/plywood, veneers and wood substitutes, gluing, bonding agents and other woodworking materials.

Determines various materials that will give items required strength, durability, fit, match and high-grade appearance. Instructs patrons in proper use of a wide range of woodworking machines such as routers, lathes, power shapers, and jointers. Demonstrates development of curved, contoured and shaped surfaces and features such as inlays, miniature parts, matched panels, complex joints, etc.

Demonstrates and follows safety practices in operating machines and using tools and equipment, protective ear and eye devices, respirators to protect against sawdust and vapors and machine guards to protect against injury. Assists other Wood Crafters in making or repairing squadron/division property and equipment when necessary. Ensures working area is clean, floor is swept and mopped and all equipment is cleaned and replaced in proper places before opening and closing the facility.

Individual must fully meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
