About This Position

This is a Research Audiologist position located in the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service at Durham VA Health Care System. The Research Audiologist at the level conducts Audiology Research and a a full range of audiological evaluations to determine the type and degree of hearing loss, determines patients' need for amplification, predicts, and measures the effectiveness of amplification, and determines need for and type of aural rehabilitation and counseling of Veterans with hearing loss.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Audiologist (Research) candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f). Education and Experience: (1) A doctoral, or its equivalent, in speech-language pathology, communication disorders or a directly related field from an accredited college or university and one year of creditable experience (see paragraph 2.g.).

OR, (2) A doctoral degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders and sciences or a related field, from an accredited college or university. Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current and unrestricted license in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth or the District of Columbia. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Research Audiologist Grade Determinations, GS-13: (1) Experience. At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level. (2) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs).

In addition to meeting the experience or educational requirements for this grade level, the candidate must fully demonstrate the following KSAs: Skill in preparing peer-reviewed publications based on research findings. Ability to produce funding through a grant as a principal investigator or co-investigator. (3) Assignment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity, and range of variety and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

Research audiologists at this level are actively involved as principal investigators or co-principal investigators in peer-reviewed VA, NIH or comparably rigorous intramural or extramurally funded research programs. Research audiologists formulate or research problems of considerable scope and complexity. They work with substantial independence in identifying, defining, and selecting problems for study.

Major Duties

A Research Audiologist is licensed to practice independently in the provision of audiologic research and clinical practice, consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate. Audiologists diagnose audiologic disorders, conduct audiologic or neuro-audiologic assessments, treat auditory disorders through various modalities and provide adjunctive interventions for the treatment of medical disorders. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Assess the nature, type, and severity of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders Identifies and evaluates individuals with hearing disorders in the reception and perception of speech, language, and other acoustic signals.

Administers the full range of tests including auditory evoked potentials, videonystagmography, tinnitus, and balance assessment; evaluates the type and degree of hearing loss; administers compensation and pension evaluations and provides an expert opinion regarding etiology of auditory dysfunctions as needed. Recommends remedial measures to mitigate hearing loss Counsels patients and family members regarding management of hearing communication, and vestibular disorders. Counsels patients family and other health care providers on hearing loss, hearing loss management and provides patient educational resources.

Incumbent serves as a consultant to other facility personnel involving the most difficult and complex cases. Provides professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional audiology to other health care professionals. Serves as consultant to other health care professionals and are recognized subject matter experts (SME) on matters related to hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders.

Uses knowledge of, and ability to apply, advanced scientific methods in the design and execution of creative and innovative research. Ability to convey scientific concepts and methodological principles to individuals with diverse levels of technical expertise. Ability to apply advanced theories and techniques; and advanced knowledge of contemporary audiology practice and related disciplines in carrying our duties and responsibilities.

Applies techniques, concepts, and methods learned in an academic setting, journals, textbooks, and other literature, and in-service programs.
