The Semester of Service Program offers students a volunteer project-based opportunity to support Federal missions, gaining hands-on experience & valuable career-ready skills. Students must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution, & participation must be with the permission of the institution at which the student is enrolled.

Qualifications

Specifically, applicants should have: Strong writing and editing skills with attention to detail Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Ability to conduct research and synthesize information from multiple sources Preferred Qualifications: Experience with data visualization or graphic design tools Understanding of user experience (UX) principles Previous internship or project experience in digital communications or web content Key Competencies: Strong organizational and project management skills Excellent written and verbal communication. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy Collaborative mindset for working with cross-functional teams Adaptability and willingness to learn new tools and technologies

Major Duties

This vacancy announcement will be open from May 14, 2026 to May 20, 2026 or when 25 applications have been received. The vacancy will close on whichever day the first of these conditions are met. State by State Website Update: This project involves modernizing the Department of State by State website, which has been archived because the information is from the last Administration and has not been updated since 2023. The intern will conduct a comprehensive content audit, research and update state-specific data including employee statistics and departmental initiatives, and work with the web development team to implement a refreshed design that aligns with current Department branding and accessibility standards.

The project will enhance user experience through improved navigation, mobile responsiveness, and contemporary web design principles while ensuring Section 508 compliance. This hands-on opportunity will allow the intern to develop skills in web content management, data research, user experience design, and project coordination while contributing to a public-facing resource that demonstrates the Department's nationwide presence and impact.

Conditions of employment To participate in this Program, you must: Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S National studying in the U.S. Students studying abroad are ineligible for application. All remote work must be completed domestic within the United States. Be enrolled not less than half-time in an accredited trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university, or other accredited educational institution. Be in good academic standing as defined by your institution. Commit to volunteering 8 – 20 hours per week for a minimum of 90 days.

Complete all required onboarding documentation assigned by the Federal agency and your academic institution. Agree to volunteer.

This position is unpaid. No compensation, stipends, or hiring preference will be granted from this work.

You may use this volunteer experience to qualify for future jobs you choose to apply for. Agree to understanding volunteers are not Federal employees. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 out of 4.0 scale.
