Podiatrist-Deputy Chief of Surgical Care
About This Position
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.
You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Preferred Experience Experience in a VA or federal healthcare environment Demonstrated record of surgical leadership within a large, complex health care system Experience with graduate medical education programs Familiarity with VA administrative processes, regulations, and reporting requirements One (1) year of experience as a Section Chief or higher in a surgical or clinical leadership role is required. This experience must demonstrate the ability to manage clinical operations, supervise professional staff, and lead quality improvement efforts Podiatrist Basic Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. AND Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.
Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. AND Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Service Chief, Section Chief or Line Manager: A service chief or line manager podiatrist must demonstrate the following: Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty; and Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs, within their respective domain.
These programs would include, but are not limited to, medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, and quality and performance improvement. Staff Podiatrist Surgical: Should be board qualified or board certified by a Council on Podiatric Medical Education certification board, or other equivalent certification to grant surgical privileges. The individual must possess experience to perform duties as a podiatrist and surgeon, and have completed an accredited residency, and/or possess experience to perform general and surgical duties and some specialized functions and procedures, without supervision.
Staff podiatrist surgeons also includes attending physicians who train podiatrist residents, assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. These podiatrists will perform office based procedures and operating room procedures and are responsible for surgical patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Added work responsibilities may include seeing hospital patients daily and carrying a pager or be available by phone for emergency consultations.

Physical Requirements: This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs.); light carrying (15 lbs. and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone.
Major Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assisting the Chief of Surgery in the overall administration, planning, and operation of the Surgical Service Providing direct oversight of surgical sections, ensuring compliance with VA, Joint Commission, and other regulatory standards Serving as Acting Chief of Surgery in the absence of the Chief of Surgery Providing direct patient care as a licensed, board-certified surgeon Participating in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives Mentoring surgical staff, residents, and fellows as applicable Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, service chiefs, and executive leadership to advance the mission of the Orlando HCS Managing resources, including personnel, equipment, and budget, in coordination with the Chief of Surgery Contributing to the development and implementation of surgical policies and procedures VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8am-4:30pm EDRP Authorized: Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply for incentive. Education
Applicants must possess a doctor of podiatric medicine degree, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 for a podiatric graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
