About This Position

The Anesthesiology Physician Assistant provides direct patient care of the Anesthesia patient at an appropriate level of competence and independence. The programmatic responsibility for Physician Assistant's is unique and differs from person to person. The individual's professional practice is characterized by assignments in clinical, administrative, educational and/or research areas, and as such serves in a variety of clinical activities and leadership roles to ensure optimal patient care.

Physician Assistant Basic Requirements Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~ Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Surgical operation room experience, Pre-Anesthesia assessments, ACLS, Point of care ultrasound, peripheral nerve blocks.

Major Duties

CLINICAL PRACTICE The applicant provides medical care for Pre-Anesthesiology inpatients and outpatients. Applicants manage patients that often have concomitant medical problems and are multi-symptomatic. The applicant shall coordinate patient care programs based upon the admitting chief complaint and perform the following routine clinical duties: 1. Admission History & Physicals (H&P), admission orders, aftercare plans, and postoperative summaries.

  1. Provides medical education/counseling of patients and their families.
  2. Performs pre-anesthetic evaluations and obtains appropriate consultations and special studies as dictated by the H&P.
  3. Demonstrates the ability to diagnose and treat Anesthesia patients seen in consultation with other health care programs, both at this facility and with similar programs elsewhere.
  4. Promotes the evolution of patient care programs for the Anesthesia patient based upon current research, concepts, and findings with the Attending Physician.
  5. Integrates the activities of the Anesthesia service with other facility programs and serves as Clinical Facilitator for the Anesthesia Section as needed.
  6. Demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating ill multi-symptomatic patients during pre-anesthetic evaluations. SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS, GRADE III, ANESTHESIOLOGY PA As a Grade III Physician Assistant, they have the following special assignments: 1.

The incumbent will participate in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of pre-procedural patients scheduled for the following procedural areas: Operating room surgical subspecialties to include: Cardiothoracic, General, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmic, oral, Otolaryngology, Podiatric, Urologic, and Vascular. Also will participate in the pre-anesthetic evaluation for non- operating room procedural specialties to include Gastroenterology, Electrophysiology, and interventional Radiology.

  1. The PA will coordinate the collection of pre-procedural documentation with procedural service line to ensure completeness prior to the scheduled procedure to enhance periprocedural patient flow.
  2. The PA will assist in the pre-anesthetic preparation of patients in the operating room as requested to include peripheral, central, and arterial venous catheterization.
  3. The PA may assist in the performance of regional nerve blocks as requested and will make Acute Pain Service rounds. VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
