About This Position

The primary purpose of this position is: Incumbent accomplishes delivery of clean laundry and will pick up soiled laundry as well as operating other vehicles as required. The organizational location of this position is: Maintenance and Operations in the Transportation section of Facilities Management Service located at the South Texas Veterans Healthcare System, Kerrville Division.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/17/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Good eye, body and limb coordination is necessary to properly operate vehicles. When assisting in loading and unloading, will be lifting heavy bags of linens (40-75 lbs.) and pushing heavily loaded carts of linens onto and off of trailers. Will require extensive stooping, bending, walking, lifting of supplies, equipment, etc., and pushing when performing tasks. May have to change or assist in changing a flat tire./Driving will be accomplished in congested city traffic and highways. Incumbent must stay alert to avoid accidents. Will be exposed to full range of weather conditions both good and bad. Must sit fir long periods of time when making deliveries.

Major Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to: -Operates diesel-powered combination tractor-trailer units meeting minimum specifications. Incumbent will make daily (Monday through Friday) deliveries and return deliveries, adhering to established routes and schedules. -Before departure, incumbent inspects load for destination and security. Should load not be complete, assists in loading. Incumbent inspects tractor and trailer for proper operation and safety. Contacts Laundry Plant Manager for any special instructions prior to departure. -Parks loaded trailer at designated dock at receiving station and disconnects. Hooks up tractor to trailer with soiled laundry. Inspects tractor and trailer for proper operation, safety, and load security. Should soiled load not be compete, assists in loading to expedite departure, and maintain schedule. Returns soiled load. -Assists in unloading soiled linen carts into linen room. Disinfects trailer using electric powered pressure washer and proper solution. Parks clean empty trailer at clean shipping dock and parking lot, as appropriate. Moves loaded and empty trailers for loading purposes as requested. Should driver have time before end of tour of duty, assists with other duties. -Responsible for servicing truck and trailer. In addition to disinfecting trailer, incumbent will fill fuel tanks, check oil, water, air, etc., as soon as soiled load is removed for vehicle to be ready for next delivery. Also performs complete safety inspection of vehicle. Reports operational and safety deficiencies immediately for corrective action. -Responsible for security of load. Ensures contents are properly tied down or load bars are in place and trailer doors are locked and sealed on both clean and soiled loads before departure. -Maintains daily motor vehicle trip logs. In case of traffic accident, prepares necessary report forms and reports accident to supervisor immediately. -May be required to transport equipment and furnishings between facilities when requested. Will assist in loading and unloading as necessary and ensure proper weight distribution and load limit. -Performs emergency and special trips as required. Double runs in one day may be required to provide emergency supplies and equipment.
