About This Position

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in Smithsonian Institution's Office of Facilities Management (FM), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability provides the full range of building services through eight maintenance and operational zones.

Qualifications

Major Duties

The Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for the operation, of gasoline, diesel, and electric powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, or to tow or recover equipment. In this position, you will: Operate passenger buses with a capacity of more than 20 passengers. Operate vehicles on roads and streets through all kinds of traffic and over rough terrain. Operate various types of motor vehicles, ranging from buses of considerable size to different types of large and heavy trucks with trailer or semi-trailer. Select the most appropriate routes to follow to ensure safe and timely arrival at assigned destinations.

Conditions of Employment

Conditions of Employment Physical Requirements: This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods. Additional Conditions of Employment At a minimum, candidate must have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with P (Passenger) Endorsement. (Candidate must submit a photocopy of CDL License, front and rear) Candidate must pass a pre-screening Drug Testing. Candidate must meet medical requirements. Candidate must register with Clearinghouse Register | Before You Register (dot.gov) Candidate must have and maintain a clean driving record, to include no major or serious violations as defined by the respective state. Candidate must wear employer-issued clothing as designated. Candidate may be required to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations. How You Will Be Evaluated

Applications will first be evaluated to determine whether the following screen out element is met: The ability to do the work of a motor vehicle operator without more than normal supervision. If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated: Ability to operate motor vehicles. Knowledge of work practices (including keeping things neat, clean and in order). Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation). Ability to safely drive motor vehicles. Ability to be reliable and dependable. Applicants who meet or exceed the screen-out element will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the screen-out element and excels in most of the job related elements above. Better Category - Meets the screen-out element and satisfies most of the job related elements above. Good Category - Meets the screen-out element, but does not satisfy most of the job related elements above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-veterans within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no veteran in that category is passed over to select a non-veteran in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Veterans who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
