About the Position: This position is located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The surrounding community is comprised of the towns of Leesville, DeRidder, New Llano, & Anacoco. The nearest cities are Alexandria & Lake Charles. The area is considered rural with the Kisatchie National Forest, which offers hunting and recreational activities, located nearby. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee is regularly required to lift and carry target mechanism weighing up to 95 pounds with the help of other workers and/or equipment. The work also requires frequent bending, stooping, and working in cramped or awkward areas.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in and out of doors in all types of weather conditions. There is frequent requirement for standing on concrete floors and working on remote ranges and rough terrain. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, abrasions, burns, and electrical shocks.

While operating a motor vehicle, there is danger of accidents and severe injury. Work will be in the shop, small arms impact areas or potential areas. Duties involve working with or in close proximity to explosive or incendiary material in an environment where there is close proximity to unexploded ordnance.

The work involves frequent exposure to foul weather conditions.

Major Duties

Applies a variety of electric resistance welding methods and equipment, or one or more manual welding processes, to carry out standard, previously done welding operations.

Operates various electric resistance welding machines such as spot, seam, and flash, or use a manual gas torch welding process such as oxyacetylene, to join a variety of different kinds of parts or components.

Assists in the check out, troubleshoot and repair of electronic targets, tower controller operating computers and electronic equipment related to range maintenance.

Fabricates target coffins, fighting positions, protection baffles, target frames, target frame holders, limit markers, v-notched stakes, flag poles, target stakes, ammunition tables, target silhouettes, and miscellaneous range related equipment.

Performs work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints, specifications, engineer plans and own knowledge of construction or needed repairs.

Operates motor vehicles and engineering equipment to transport passengers and equipment.

This position requires a 1 year probationary period during which the agency evaluates your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is a TERM position NTE 4 Years and may be made permanent. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.

Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. Position may be filled as a time limited promotion, reassignment, or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 4 Years by a current permanent Army employee. Time limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years.

Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years; however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition. Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.
