This position of Maintenance Mechanic Leader is located at the Cincinnati, OH VA Medical Center in the Engineering Service.

Qualifications

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving working, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, and crawling while performing his/her duties. He/she must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding. He/she must be capable of climbing over and under equipment, working in confined spaces, crawl spaces, and other isolated areas.

The incumbent must be able to work for extended periods in uncomfortable positions and conditions. He/she must be able to lift loads of up to 40 pounds unassisted.

Major Duties

The Cincinnati VA Medical Center (CVAMC) is a two-division campus located in Cincinnati, OH and Fort Thomas, KY serving 15 counties in Southwest OH, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana with 6 Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Bellevue, KY; Florence, KY; Lawrenceburg, IN; Hamilton, OH; Clermont County, OH, and Georgetown, OH. The CVAMC also supports two off main campus locations in the Cincinnati area via an Eye Center and Mental Health Outreach Community Division. Major Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Shop Supervisor, the incumbent will assist in the following: Passes on to other workers the instructions received from Supervisors and gets work started by assigning job tasks to crew members.

Works along with other workers and sets the pace of work to be done. Estimating cost and writing specifications for replacement of equipment and improvements. Performs lay-out of work task and assignments.

This includes interpreting and working from written specifications, blueprints, sketches and oral instructions. Provides oversight of equipment repairs and new installations of building service equipment ensuring proper installations and methods. Coordinates between Engineering Service other services when scheduling planned utility shutdowns or major facility or equipment repairs (including but not limited to oxygen, steam, water, sewage systems, electrical etc.).

Assists project engineers with work performed by contractors by scheduling shutdowns and other operational requirements for maintenance and repair or installation of steam, water or electrical systems and equipment. Assists supervisor in establishing deadlines and work expectations. Plans sequence of operation for subordinates.

Sees that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy. Maintains current working knowledge, and answers questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives, for example, technical orders. Prioritize work assignments thru the work order system and assigns daily work activities to team members.

Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during work. Ensures that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Ensure Joint Commission and Preventative Maintenance documentation is kept current and properly filed.

The incumbent participates in management meetings for planning of utility and equipment analysis and replacement Reports to supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of work delays. Checks work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Urges or advises other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet deadlines.

Assures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed. Directs and oversees technicians in the performance of equipment failure diagnosis and repair. Demonstrates proper work methods. Observes, evaluates, and performs safety and functionality testing of repaired engineering equipment.

Coordinates and instructs mechanics in the proper and most efficient methods to be used in the performance of their duties with emphasis on safety practices and precautions. Promotes co-worker participation in management programs of beneficial suggestions, quality assurance and cost reduction. Conducts training sessions designed to update, improve, or upgrade the knowledge and skills of others.

Assists in determinizing additional needs for employee training and education. Performs routine job inspections to ensure instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Assist shop supervisor in scheduling and coordinating of employee leave request to minimize the impact of employee absence to the operation of the unit.
