Lead Medical Support Assistant
About This Position
The incumbent serves as a Lead Medical Support Assistant (MSA) for inpatient wards and is responsible for answering questions for lower graded staff relating to healthcare services in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The Lead MSA monitors and makes work assignments, provides input on performance, resolves daily workplace issues, and maintains efficient workflow.
Qualifications

Experience and Education: (1) Experience.
Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR, (2) Education. One year above high school; OR, (3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations:
In addition to the basic requirements for employment listed above, the following experience criteria must be met for this GS-6 Lead Medical Support Assistant position. Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must also demonstrate all of the KSAs below: i. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. ii.
Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect, ensuring compliance with established policies and regulations. iii. Ability to provide staff development and training. iv. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage priorities, and coordinate with staff in the unit in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely manner.
This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work. v. Ability to review and monitor data to ensure all reports are complete and accurate. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. Physical Requirements: The work of the positions is primarily sedentary; however, some walking, standing, bending stooping and carrying of small items such as files may be required.
Major Duties
The Lead MSA is responsible for answering questions for lower graded staff relating to healthcare services in an inpatient setting. Duties may include but are not limited to: Provide information about VA Medical Care Cost Recovery Program to patients regarding insurance data collection and revenue collection; Compile readily available data from prescribed sources; Search records, files, or electronic data banks to locate information needed, and to verify information given; Assists staff with a variety of clerical duties in one or more inpatient wards; Provides administrative support to Physicians, Physician's Assistants, Nurses, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Dietitians, Social Workers, and other administrative and professional staff throughout the Primary Care Service area; Administrative scheduling and appointment coordination for diagnostic testing, and consultative appointments for many clinical services; May be required to conduct individual quality assurance/process improvement checks/studies; Assist the supervisor or the Training Specialist in training staff; Performs other related duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.
