About This Position

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.

You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable.

Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).

Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations:

In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Interventional Radiography) GS-11 Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-10) level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a quality control technologist, DRT team leader, supervisory radiologic technologist, [PACS technologist, clinical program director], or an assistant chief radiologic technologist. Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): *Skill in directing on-the-job training for employees. *Ability to evaluate work performance of lower level employees and recommend performance ratings. *Skill in technical planning and oversight to set and adjust work priorities, and [ensure] that work requirements are met based on employee capabilities.

Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including knowledge of growth and development. *Knowledge of medical center, VHA, and government-wide human resources management regulations, policies, and procedures. Major Duties

This Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (IR) position is in Diagnostic Imaging services at the VA Boston Healthcare System located at the West Roxbury location.

This position is full-time at 40 hours per week. The Radiology Lead Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the Interventional Radiology Department at West Roxbury. The incumbent works closely with the Lead CT Technologist, Nurse Manager of IR, CT/IR technologists, radiologists, clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction.

Duties include but not limited to: Develops and maintains an on-call schedule for IR technologists. Trains new technologists in ALL aspects of Interventional Radiology protocols. Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs.

Ensures that adequate quantities of Interventional Radiology supplies are available at both campuses, to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Coordinates the repair and installation of Interventional Radiology equipment at both campuses. Is proficient in all exams offered by Interventional Radiology, including angiography, venography, biopsies, drain procedures, radio frequency ablations, microwave ablations, chemoembolization, and Y-90 radiopharmaceutical injections.

Performs Interventional Radiology exams on critically ill patients and intubated on the floors and in the intensive care units. Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of nonstandard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, and pre exam sterile prep.

Schedules patients for examinations and advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention. Performs many exams utilizing surgical sterile techniques.

This requires " scrub-in technique," preparation of surgical trays, preparation of contrast, supplying of catheters and guide wires, sterile assurance of the patient and equipment. Oversees QA of all IR exams done for Radiology. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients.

This includes the maintenance of patient logbooks, registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized information system, copying of images (to CD or film), logging patients on the HIS-RIS work list. Performs irregular hour emergency scans on standby, 24 hours per day, coverage. May be required to perform diagnostic radiographic examinations.
