About This Position

This position is located at the Tampa VAMC Interventional Radiology. Leads Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists and performs a full range of general radiologic procedures. Serves as the principal DRT, coordinating interventional radiology and ensuring alignment with the James A. Haley VA Hospital mission. Collaborates with technologists, radiologists, clinicians, and staff to optimize quality control, workflow, exam results, and patient satisfaction.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may b referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: GS-10: Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the 11 incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: The incumbent functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below.

The incumbent provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: Ability to provide technical oversight and assign personnel and tasks to be accomplished in a manner that assures completion of the workload utilizing the personnel to the greatest advantage thus providing the optimal level of patient care within the workday. Ability to plan, direct, and distribute work assignments to DRTs at lower grade levels.

Skill in instructing and training DRTs on newly acquired equipment. Ability to plan and project staffing needs. Skill to independently perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatmentsituations Interventional Radiography (IR): Technologists working in this special assignment may function as vascular interventional (VI) technologists which use specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures.

This specialty requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. The technologist must be knowledgeable in the specialized equipment employed for digital subtraction systems and interventional procedures. The technologist administers contrast media under the supervision of the staff radiologist and confers with the radiologist to establish requirements regarding contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiologic monitoring to perform procedures.

IR technologist must be knowledgeable in digital imagining and PACS. Grandfathering Provision: All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation. Major Duties

Major duties include, but not limited to: Functions as a lead DRT Technologist for a group of DRTs Provides a full range of interventional radiologic treatment procedures, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within interventional radiology, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. Lead DRT has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the department. Ensures adequate quantities of Angio/"specials" supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering Receipt and inventory control Assures that angiography procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies at all times with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies Assists in determining costs for specific exams, and projecting costs for budgetary purposes Coordinates new product evaluation Recommends methods and products to reduce costs and/or increase quality.

Develops and maintains an on-call schedule for technologists Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and develops the weekly/monthly schedules Organizes staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations Reports absences and tardiness to the nurse manager Recommends the reassignment of techs, if necessary, because of call-ins or increased/decreased workload Coordinates leave requests, i.e., vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing levels. Trains new technologists in digital angiography, venograms, myelograms, percutaneous nephrostomy, and other special procedures Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs Recommends, coordinates, and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols Instruct other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies Participates in the education of angiographic technologists as well as other technologists through departmental in-services Participate in the evaluation of new employees Coordinates the repair and installation of angiography equipment. Serves as the liaison between Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors Tracks and maintains records of repair histories and vendor performance Monitors work performance by contractors and in-house services to ensure satisfactory completeness Recommends equipment improvements, repairs, upgrades, etc.

Participates in developing specifications for new equipment requests Participates in developing service contract specifications Develops and maintains a quality control program Assists with the performance of a wide variety of technical procedures including, but not limited to, aortogram runoffs, arches, carotids, extremities, and cerebrals Serves as resource person, assists work schedule, interdepartmental committee lead, assists with policy, protocol, and QA program development, and ensures proper safety protocols are followed Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self Prepares contrast materials Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients Performs irregular-hour emergency procedures on standby, 24 hours per day coverage May be required to perform diagnostic radiographic examinations VA Careers - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: https://youtube.com/embed/I-4ku5UMvWM Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 7:30am-4:00pm with on call requirements Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
