About This Position

This is a full-time position with the Information Technology Office at the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, D.C. Qualifications

Qualifications include a four-year computer degree or equivalent experience in server administration. The ability to lift and rack server equipment of approximately 50 lbs. Extensive knowledge of Linux server technologies, working knowledge of Ansible/ Satellite or other Linux automation tools, Docker containers VMWARE virtualization and networking.

Administration of cloud-based and on-premise services, such as AWS, Azure, and Kubernetes, along with other supporting software experience is beneficial. Working knowledge of Windows Servers and Active Directory domains, including Linux systems interacting with those domains. Ability to troubleshoot issues relating to Windows Desktop, Windows Server, and Linux systems.

Ability to collaborate with peers and management daily in performing the maintenance, upgrade and project tasks including frequent status reporting both written and verbal. Ability to perform tasks individually and be self-motivating. Must be able to obtain TS level clearance if required.

Daily tasks include: Operational support of the Linux and Windows server environments. Ticket processing in the Information Technology Service Management (ITSM) system from initiation to completion. Responding to system monitoring alerts as needed.

Performing remediation of cybersecurity risks as directed. Creating process and troubleshooting documentation as needed. Performing operating system and application updates on a routine basis. Assisting in project tasks as directed.

Briefing the Assistant Director Server Administration on identified issues/risks and project tasks on a regular basis. Strong interpersonal communication skills, ability to communicate and understand technical information, comprehend technical instructions, evaluate problems, and assist users; ability to remain calm and professional in high stress environment when confronted with demanding users, short timeframes, or other pressing and urgent demands.

Major Duties

The Senior Server Administrator, Special Operations position within the Office of Information Technology is responsible for the design development implementations and support of all hardware and software platforms used to facilitate automated systems within the United States Supreme Court. The incumbent is responsible for the following subsystems: server architecture, mail system architecture, virtual desktop systems architecture, and the data retention architecture. The incumbent also supports the integration of all software applications developed for use within the Court, and software products and assets for the monitoring and protection of the underlying infrastructure into the server architecture.

The duties of a Server Administrator include the following: Monitor, maintain and perform upgrades of the hardware, software and operating system of the equipment under the scope of the Server Administration department. This is the primary responsibility of all Server Administrators to keep the server environment running and operational as close to 24/7/365 as feasible. Patch testing and upgrades are performed in a computer lab that mirrors the production systems where possible.

Technologies include RedHat derived Linux distributions, VMWARE Server and Desktop virtualization, and fault tolerant rack mount server hardware. Participate in the after-hours support rotation, which involves responding to Tier 1 escalations and automated server alerts as needed to keep systems operational and available.

After hours support is handled by one (1) administrator for one (1) week before rotating to the next administrator. The number of weeks and holidays each year is divided as evenly as possible between all administrators. Perform upgrades of existing technology and installation of new technologies. The higher grades of the position will perform research, design and introduction of new technologies under management supervision. Occasional travel to training classes, conferences and the other local locations that house server administration equipment.

Education

A Bachelor's degree in the field of computer science is required or equivalent years of experience working in the server administration field may be substituted for a college degree.
