About This Position

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo.

This position is located in Office of Education Technology (OET), Office of the Secretary for Education, Smithsonian Institution. The Office of Education Technology (OET) operates education programs that reach out to teachers, students, and the general public. The programs include digital platforms such as websites, digital tools, and learning interactives.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: The qualification standard allows eligibility through meeting either the requirements specified in the section titled Education or the requirements specified in the section titled Experience. Education: Ph.D.

Undergraduate or Graduate Education: Degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

Experience: Experience must be IT related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate. You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience in managing database systems and providing information technology end user customer support.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Major Duties

The Information Technology Specialist (DATAMGT/CUSTSPT) will serve as the subject matter expert on database systems and the processes around them. In this position, you will: Provide the tools and processes to remain nimble in how the unit collects, synthesizes, and analyzes data. Furnish end user support and make recommendations for systems and processes.

Serve as the liaison with the Office of the Chief Information Office (OCIO) on all IT related services and problems. Lead as the system administrator for all EDGE databases. Serve as administrator technical support for Google Classroom, setting up and maintaining Google Classroom infrastructure, including account creation, maintenance, and content archiving in compliance with Privacy Office standards.

How You Will Be Evaluated

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria: Knowledge of and skill to apply database management concepts, principles, and methods including database logical and physical design, normalization, storage capacity management, and backup and recovery; sources, characteristics, and uses of the organization's data assets. Knowledge of and skill to apply customer support concepts and methods, installed applications, operating systems, network systems, protocols, and equipment.

Knowledge of and skill to install, upgrade, troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve problems with desktop and laptop computer systems and all related operating systems, application software, and peripheral devices.
