About This Position

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Utilities and Power Plant Operations, Maintenance and Generation Division, Electrical Branch. The High Voltage Electrician Assistant Supervisor shares responsibility with the High Voltage Electrician Supervisor for assigning, directing and reviewing the work of subordinates and evaluating their work performance; planning, scheduling and coordinating work operations; and solving problems related to the work performed by Branch employees.

Qualifications

You must meet all eligibility and qualifications requirements by the closing date of the job announcement. Ability to supervise employees performing high voltage electrician tasks such as installation, maintenance, modification, or repair of electrical systems.

Major Duties

The position is a working supervisor responsible for direction and supervision of Electrician work performance inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing high voltage electrical systems. Supervises subordinate high voltage electricians. Assigns, directs, and reviews their work; evaluates their work performance; plans, schedules, and coordinates work operations; solves problems related to high-voltage electrical work; approves leave requests; manages overtime; and performs a wide variety of other technical and administrative duties required in carrying out supervisory responsibilities.

Performs troubleshooting, maintenance, diagnosis, inspection, repair, overhaul and installation of complex electrical distribution equipment and systems including working on energized high voltage equipment. Diagnoses troubleshoots and determines necessary repair work requiring operation of systems, transferring loads, dispatching power, isolating and/or making safe clearances on above equipment. Eliminates or prevents fault caused by induction, stress impedance mismatch, transformer polarity, system phase relation, power failure cascade, or corona.

Maintains motors, control circuits, electronic relays, emergency generators, elevators, traveling cranes and hoists, VFD's and PLC, wiring systems, lights, starters, portable battery operated emergency lights, inter-communication telephone systems and other equipment associated with the operation of the coal and oil fired boilers, refrigeration plant, and the steam and chilled water distribution systems. Many of the motors are operated by remote control stations in a sequence such as the cooling towers, coal and oil handling and ash, dust collection systems, sonic horns. Maintains 130 volt D.C.

Battery systems and their associated charging systems. Maintains D.C. supervisory and pilot circuits, maintains emergency lighting. Operates 13,200 volt to 4,160 volt switchgear and transformer distribution systems, 13,200 volt and 4,160 volt motors and their controls.

Based on duties assigned, employees may require knowledge of hazardous (e.g. lead paint and solvents), universal (e.g. lamps and batteries, and/or non-hazardous (e.g. oil and polychlorinated biphenyl) waste management requirements to ensure compliance with environmental regulations in performance of duties (e.g. decide hazardous material is no longer needed and will be disposed, select containers for waste accumulation, add waste to containers, label containers, move waste to and from waste accumulation sites, manage waste accumulation sites, provide waste management guidance/answer questions concerning waste management.
