About This Position

This position is located in Denali National Park and Preserve, in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division and is the park's Emergency Services Coordinator and Paramedic providing advanced emergency medical/patient. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.

You will work from approximately 8 months, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

This experience includes: (1) Assist with coordination of emergency medical services (EMS) and search and rescue (SAR) programs; (2) Providing medical care at the advanced EMS level; (3) responding to medical calls to identify and treat trauma and emergencies; (4) leading or training others in performing EMS work.

You must include hours per week worked.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated.

You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Major Duties

The major duties of the Paramedic position include, but are not limited to, the following: Respond to medical emergencies by vehicle, boat, helicopter, fixed wing aircraft or foot, involving injured and ill persons, ranging from minor medical to life threatening emergencies. Provides both basic and advanced life support measures in an out of hospital/field setting. Coordinates the park's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Search and Rescue (SAR) programs.

Maintains oversight of program readiness by tracking responder certifications, coordinating training, and ensuring personnel meet qualification requirements for emergency response operations. Manages emergency response equipment and resources to ensure operational readiness. Serves as the first-line supervisor for up to six seasonal employes.

Performs supervisory duties less than 20% of the tiem.

Conditions of Employment

U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.

You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month.

You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

You will be required to possess a current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician- Paramedic (NREMT-P) Certification.

You will be required to possess a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification.

You will be required to possess a current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Physical Demands: The incumbent must maintain good physical condition and meet applicable standards outlined in Director's Order/Reference Manual-57, NPS Occupational Medical Standards and Health and Fitness requirements.

Work demands range from periods of office work (walking, standing, sitting, and lifting) to strenuous periods of extended and intense physical and mental activity. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Search and Rescue (SAR) activities involve walking long distances over rough terrain, carrying heavy loads, and using technical rescue equipment. Going without sleep for extended periods may occur during emergency incidents or search and rescue operations.

The incumbent must be able to fly in helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft without ill effects. The work involves extended periods of heavy lifting and moving of patients. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined spaces.

During search and rescue and other strenuous activities, the incumbent may be required to lift or carry equipment weighing more than 50 pounds over long distances. Working Conditions: Work is performed in an office setting, medical clinic, ambulance, classroom, in the field, on trails, and in remote backcountry settings. On a regular and recurring basis employee is required to work in all types of weather conditions, including temperatures ranging from 90 degrees to -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

EMS work involves frequent exposure to hazardous environments, hazardous flight landings and takeoffs, extremes in temperature, and exposure to communicable diseases. The employee is required to comply with use of various levels of personal protective clothing and special safety and health precautions. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

Alaska currently does not have a state income tax. Salary and COLA subject to annual review and adjustment. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the person selected for the position is outside more than 50 miles from the Denali Park, AK duty station and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses under the Federal Travel Regulations.

In the event of an accident while traveling in a government aircraft, the payable benefits of a private life insurance policy may be affected. Government housing may be available for this position.
