About This Position

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This is a developmental Firefighter Position. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-04 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private service or organization in order to provide fire protection services; OR (2) Controlling and extinguishing of fires; OR (3) performing rescue operations to include the administration of first aid to injured victims. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of firefighting and life-saving techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private service or organization in order to provide fire protection services; (2) Controlling and extinguishing of fires; (3) performing rescue operations to include the administration of first aid to injured victims. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of firefighting and life-saving techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of Federal, State, municipal, local, or volunteer organization/fire department; (2) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (3) Performing rescue operations to include the administration of first aid to injured victims; (4) Operating fire communication equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of a federal, State, municipal, local, or volunteer organization/fire department; (2) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (3) Performing rescue operations to include the administration of first aid to injured victims; (4) Operating fire communication equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). In addition to meeting the experience and/or education requirements above, applicants must also possess the following certifications through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M: GS-05: Firefighter I and Firefighter II GS-06: Firefighter I and Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Hazardous Materials Technician GS-07: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician - Basic, HAZMAT Technician, HAZMAT Operations, Driver Operator - Pumper, Driver Operator Aerial. This position has a Maximum Entry Age. IAW DOD Instruction 1400.25, Vol 336 dated January 22, 2015. An individual not appointed by the last day of the month in which the individual becomes age 37 will not be appointed or assigned to this position. Individuals who are past the maximum entry age limit of 37 but who previously served in an approved Firefighter position MAY be eligible for reinstatement.

Major Duties

Respond to fire alarms for all classes of fires, including those involving radioactive and/or hazardous materials, medical emergencies, rescue operations.
Primarily assigned as a firefighter, but when more experienced, will be assigned as equipment driver/operator to operate pumpers or other emergency vehicles.
Determine pressure required and adjusts valves, as necessary, to regulate flow of extinguishing agents.
Use breathing and other protective equipment.
Use a variety of hand and power tools and works in all phases of firefighting/rescue operations.
Perform daily operational checks for both truck and equipment to ensure operational readiness at all times.
As an Emergency Medical Technician with Basic Life Support training, respond on site to accidents and other emergencies involving injuries and illnesses.
Establish communication with the receiving facility, providing all patient information including estimated time of arrival.
Select the safest and most efficient route to and from emergencies considering traffic patterns, health care facility locations, etc.
Perform operator maintenance on ambulance vehicles and medical equipment issued by the ambulance service as required.
As a fully qualified Hazardous Materials Technician, respond as a member of the department's hazardous materials team.
