About This Position
This position is located in the Audiology Service at the Birmingham VA Medical Center, Birmingham, Alabama. The duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout the medical center including all clinical and patient care areas involved with the Audiology service, including outlying CBOC locations. This position serve as an Assistant Chief.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Doctor of Audiology (AUD) from an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) or Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or Other doctoral degree in hearing science or a directly related field from an institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Licensure: Individuals must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in a United States state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency: Audiologist must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Grade Determinations: In addition to basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining grade for GS-13 Supervisory Audiologist. Experience: At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at lease one year comparable to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the candidate must demonstrate the following professional KSAs identified below. Skill in communicating established performance benchmarks to a service or equivalent organizational department. Skill in implementing continual performance improvement activities to meet performance benchmarks. Ability to perform a full scope of managerial responsibilities. Ability to lead audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and/or other professionals within associated disciplines. Ability to develop contingencies to ensure continual service operations. Preferred Experience: Supervisory Experience preferred; Cochlear Implant, Tinnitus counseling, and/or vestibular experience preferred. Physical Requirements: Requires periods of sitting, bending, reaching, crouching, stooping, stretching, and lifting (under 15 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); use of fingers and both hands required; good vision with corrective glasses or contacts; or hearing with aid. Major Duties
This position serves as an Assistant Chief; serves as full assistant to a service chief, share the full scope of delegated managerial responsibilities and serve as the acting service chief in the absence of the service chief. Duties include but not limited to: Supervisory: Serves as Assistant Chief and makes decisions affecting staff and other resources. May be delegated full administrative and clinical responsibility for planning and directing the staff assignments in various clinical settings. Encourages professional development, creates an environment of learning, and serves as mentor to staff audiologists. Responsible for supervision, administrative management and direction of the program services assigned. Ensures compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements, monitors staff performance, and develops and implements program based on Veterans' need and current research findings Resolving staff conflicts that might interfere with the service delivery, identifying continuing education and training needs and other clinical and administrative responsibilities to ensure that the mission of the service and medical center has been satisfied. May interview candidates for positions and recommend appointments, advancements, or disciplinary actions when appropriate May develop positions descriptions and functional statements and are responsible for professional and administrative management of an assigned area. May make selections, assign personnel, and serve as a mentor to help employees develop their full potential. Maintains interdependent relationships with other services to accomplish medical center goals. Communicates established performance benchmarks to a service or equivalent organizational department. Organizes work, sets priorities, delegates tasks and responsibilities, and meets multiple deadlines. Responsible for general or technical supervision of key clinical or training programs within the service, and overall technical and administrative oversight of audiologists. Incumbent functions as an independent practitioner for clinical responsibilities and is fully responsible for all clinical decisions under general oversight of the Service Chief or other delegated authority. Performs other duties as assigned by leadership. Clinical: Independently provides audiologic services at all levels of complexity and consult with peers and supervisors as appropriate. Diagnose audiologic disorders, conducts audiologic neuro-audiologic assessments, treat auditory disorders through various modalities and provide adjunctive interventions for the treatment of medical disorders. Consults with medical center staff on various patient care issues. May be involved in program evaluation, teaching, training and research activities. Assess the nature, type and severity of hearing/communication/vestibular disorders. Administers the full range of tests including auditory evoked potentials, videonystagmography, tinnitus, and balance assessment: evaluates the type and degree of hearing loss, administers compensation and pension evaluations and provides an expert opinion regarding etiology of auditory dysfunctions as needed. Serves as education coordinator for audiology/speech students. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am- 4:00pm. Subject to change based on the needs of the agency.
