About This Position
Serves as an Airway Transportation System Specialist within AMA-900.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position at the FG/GS 13 (FV-I) level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the FG/GS-12 (FV-H) level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized Experience includes: Experience providing technical support for one or more of the FAA National Airspace System (NAS) and Next Generation (NextGen) Air Transportation System; Automation, Communication, Environmental, Navigation and Radar systems used to support FAA Academy training; Experience identifying and analyzing the conditions affecting problems with designing, testing, modifying, troubleshooting, or maintaining systems; Experience providing guidance and conducting on-the-job training.
AND Physical Requirements: You must be able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position without hazard to yourself or others. Selectee must pass a pre-employment physical prior to appointment.

Major Duties
The position requires the advanced application of knowledge, practices, principles, theories, concepts, methods, techniques, and abilities for the discipline to which the position is classified. Responsibilities may include inspection, oversight, planning, developing, coordinating, deploying, implementing, maintaining, training, and replacing systems of assigned facilities and/or systems. The incumbent is required to interact with personnel from the FAA Academy and representatives both internal and external to the FAA.
Serves as Air Transportation System Specialist technician-in-depth providing the highest organizational technical support for a multitude of highly complex integrated systems which directly support the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Academy training systems. Performs work or projects requiring the ability to interpret, select, adapt, and apply technical experience during the installation, maintenance and repair of one or more of the FAA National Airspace System (NAS) and Next Generation (NextGen) Air Transportation System; Automation, Communication, Environmental, Navigation and Radar systems used to support FAA Academy training. The tasks include a wide array of complex and varying assignments, understanding of new technologies and comprehensive technical knowledge of assigned discipline(s).
Under limited supervision applies knowledge of non-professional engineering principles and practices in the field of electronics, information technology and systems maintenance. The incumbent must have knowledge in related fields of mechanical and electrical engineering. Performs technologically advanced assignments and repairs on a wide array of complex and often integrated systems.
Is considered the technical expert within the organization for the assigned systems and is responsible for training other individuals and providing technical direction and guidance. Often represents the organization as the technical point of contact for the complex systems and will receive limited instruction in engineering, information technology, electrical principles, electronics principles, FAA regulations, FAA policies, FAA programs and shop practices. Assist others and work independently on various assignments.
Communicates with FAA Academy and representatives of external organizations to share essential information, provide critical data, as well as communicate project and system status. Works with project managers to complete project studies and cost estimates. Project studies and cost estimates should include project manpower, material requirements, equipment utilization, and updated completion schedules.
General program assignments are received from management and are stated in terms of overall objectives and boundaries. Assignments completed are considered technically authoritative and are reviewed only for general compliance with organizational objectives. Management work assignments will be delivered through the FG-2101-13 ATSS.
Provides guidance and on-the-job training to other technicians and trainees in accordance with established practices and procedures. Provides guidance to resolve difficult technical or operational issues. Independently resolves all but unique technical problems.
Interprets and adapts technical instructions, manufacturer's manuals, FAA policies and procedures, and other publications. Performs other duties as assigned. The position may require rotating shifts and weekends.
